Back in January, I had the honor of having a Saturday brunch with the editors of the critically acclaimed film, Cannes’ favorite and Oscar contender The Secret Agent. The brunch was attended by 3 more colleagues and friends from American Cinema Editors. Director Kleber Mendonca Filho made a surprise appearance to the delight of everyone, had a quick coffee and excused himself to go pick up his Critics Choice 2025 Best Foreign Language Film Award which was taking place at around the same time.

Conversations revolved around production and editing anecdotes, the distinct look of the film which was achieved by Kleber’s insistence on using vintage anamorphic lenses and the difference between Hollywood and Brazilian acting. Worth noting, was the importance of studying acting for editors, something nearly every veteran editor recommends.

It was impossible not to feel inspired by the incredible stories and insights that were shared. That, and also leaving slightly over-caffeinated!
